Tirzepatide (GLP-1/GIP Dual Agonist)
FDA-approved dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist (Mounjaro/Zepbound) achieving up to 22% body weight reduction — the most effective pharmacological weight loss agent yet studied.
Half-Life
~5 days (weekly dosing)
Molecular Weight
4813.5 g/mol
Tirzepatide is a synthetic 39-amino-acid peptide that is the first-in-class dual agonist of both the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors. FDA-approved as Mounjaro (2022) for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound (2023) for chronic weight management. In the SURMOUNT trials, tirzepatide 15 mg produced mean body weight reduction of ~22.5% — surpassing semaglutide and approaching the efficacy of bariatric surgery. Its dual mechanism activates both incretin pathways synergistically, with GIP agonism potentially enhancing fat cell lipolysis and reducing GLP-1-mediated nausea. Research peptide versions are not FDA-approved pharmaceutical tirzepatide.
