PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a cyclic heptapeptide derived from the hormone alpha-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone). Unlike most sexual function drugs that act on the vascular system (e.g. PDE5 inhibitors), PT-141 acts centrally through melanocortin receptors in the hypothalamus — directly modulating sexual motivation and arousal at the neurological level. It was FDA-approved in 2019 as Vyleesi for premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Research in men suggests benefits for erectile dysfunction, particularly in cases where PDE5 inhibitors are insufficient.
