A synthetic peptide originally derived from a protein found in stomach acid, studied for accelerating healing in tendons, ligaments, gut lining, muscle, and bone — almost entirely in animal models. The main proposed mechanism is growth of new blood vessels into damaged tissue (angiogenesis via VEGF), which delivers nutrients and oxygen for repair. The rodent evidence is the most extensive of any research peptide, but there are no completed published human trials for any indication. BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (15 amino acids) produced as a partial sequence of a protein isolated from human gastric juice. Its primary research applications span gastrointestinal mucosal healing, connective tissue repair (tendons, ligaments), and neuroprotection — studied almost exclusively in rodent models by the Sikirić group at the University of Zagreb since the early 1990s. A Phase II trial for inflammatory bowel disease was conducted by PLIVA but the full results have never been published as a peer-reviewed trial report, which is the central gap between the extensive preclinical literature and any legitimate human efficacy claim. The compound is stable in gastric acid, which has driven specific interest in oral dosing for GI conditions.
